Low Back Pain: Gold-Standard Evidence

Low back pain is the leading cause of physical disability worldwide, affecting approximately 20% of U.S. adults. Extensive research demonstrates that chiropractic care is highly effective for managing both acute and chronic low back pain.

Major Clinical Findings:

A landmark 2018 study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) involving 750 active-duty military personnel found that chiropractic care combined with usual medical care provided significantly better pain relief and greater reduction in disability than medical care alone.

A 2017 systematic review and meta-analysis of 26 randomized clinical trials found that spinal manipulative therapy was associated with statistically significant improvements in both pain and function for acute low back pain, with benefits lasting up to 6 weeks.

Research shows that patients who received chiropractic adjustments reported moderate short- term improvements in low back pain intensity (mean improvement of approximately 1.1 points on a 10-point scale) and disability (mean improvement of 2.2 points on the Roland Morris Disability Questionnaire).

Research Highlights:

A 2021 systematic review found that spinal manipulation appeared effective for treating acute neck pain, both alone and in combination with medications and physiotherapy.

Studies show a remarkable 94% success rate for neck pain patients who receive chiropractic adjustments of both the cervical and thoracic spine, compared to just 35% improvement with neck adjustments alone.

A 2018 study revealed that chiropractic care may work by increasing levels of oxytocin, neurotensin, and other natural pain-relieving hormones in the body.

Neck Pain: Proven Relief and Function Improvement

Neck pain is the third most commonly reported type of pain in the United States. Multiple high-quality studies demonstrate chiropractic care’s effectiveness for neck pain management.

Headaches and Migraines: Drug-Free Relief

Chiropractic care has been shown to be particularly effective for cervicogenic headaches (those originating from the neck) and migraines.

Clinical Evidence:

A randomized controlled trial (Australian study) showed 71% of participants experienced more than 50% reduction in headache frequency with chiropractic spinal manipulation.

Research published in 2011 concluded that evidence supports chiropractic care, including spinal manipulation, for improving migraine and cervicogenic headaches.

Independent reviews from the Quebec Task Force, RAND Corporation, and Duke University have all concluded that chiropractic neck manipulation is a safe and effective treatment for many common types of headaches and is often more effective and safer than taking common painkillers.
